Earlier this year, predictions suggested that the prince might propose with the Queen Mother's engagement ring, or her massive diamond-and-pearl ring, but Harry opted instead to create a custom piece, showing his true love and devotion and putting something much more important than money towards the symbolic piece of jewellery; thought.
At the couple's first official interview with the BBC after the engagement, Harry said: "The ring is obviously yellow gold because that's Meghan's favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana.
"The little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewellery collection, to make sure that she's with us on this crazy journey together."
The African country of Botswana holds a special place in Prince Harry's heart. It was the first place the prince visited following his mother's untimely death when he was just 12 years old, and he has continued to visit and work out there throughout his life.
Combining an important country and his loving mother, Harry has created a ring which encapsulates true love, and presented it to the girl who means the world to him, using a three stone ring to show his past, present and future. And while the press are commenting on the supposed value of the three-stone beauty, the real value is in its sentiment.
Recently, makers of the most photographed ring since Prince William popped the question to Kate Middleton in 2010, have said they will not be recreating Prince Harry's stunning design.
Stephen Connelly, the director of court jeweller Cleave and Company said: “We’re not going to be making replicas of it,” he said. “If you want a ring, then we’ll design you a different one.”
