We all know about the diamond engagement ring, and the Four C's of the diamond. But how much do you know about the Eternity Ring, and it's evolution through time?
An eternity ring, also known as an infinity ring, is a woman's ring, worn on the hand, comprising a band of precious metal (usually gold) set with a continuous line of identically cut gemstones (usually diamonds) to symbolize never-ending love, usually given by a spouse to his or her wife on the occasion of a significant anniversary.
History
The concept of an eternity ring dates back approximately 4,000 years to Egyptian times. While the Egyptians didn’t necessarily use the rings to commemorate a specific occasion, they were said to have used them simply as a token of both eternal love and life.
Early examples found were a rather ordinary circle of metal, precious or otherwise, set with stones either on the top half of the ringor runningthe entire circumference of the ring. Some early examples of eternity rings were also designed to mimic the image of a snake devouring its own tail, a common symbol used to represent eternity, often referred to as the ‘ouroboros’.
Symbolism
An eternity ring can hold just as much meaning as an engagement or wedding ring as it is just as much a promise of love and commitment. The three rings are often worn on the third finger of the left hand. In the past it was believed that a vein ran directly from this finger to the heart. It was named vena amoris, Latin for the vein of love.
The eternity ring is closely related to the wedding ring and engagement ring and is a continuous circle that shows love can never be broken; a symbol of everlasting love for the couple. Although diamonds are often a popular choice of gem stone, sapphires, rubies and emeralds can also be used.
Differences
There are two main eternity ring designs; the full eternity ring and the half eternity ring.
Full eternity rings usually feature a gold band set with a continuous circle of stones. The circle of stones is thought to represent continuous and ongoing love.
Half eternity rings usually feature a continuous line of stones on the face of the ring rather than a continuous circle. This is mostly done for comfort. The continuous line of stones is still said to represent eternity.
A half eternity ring is set with stones halfway around the band. Depending on the stone size, they usually feature five, seven or nine gemstones. The stones may be of uniform shape and size, or the half eternity ring may have a tapered design with gems of graduating sizes.
