Radiant Ruby

July Birthstone - Ruby

It's the birthstone for July, and the anniversary stone for 40 years - this month, we are all about the Ruby!

Red is the colour of most intense emotions - love and anger, passion and fury.

Early cultures treasured rubies for their similarity to the redness of the blood which flowed through their veins, and believed that rubies held the power to life.

Value

Ruby is the most valuable variety of the corundum mineral species, which also includes sapphire.

Rubies can command the highest price per-carat of any coloured stone, making it one of the most important gems in the coloured stone market.

On May 12, 2015, a 25.59-carat ruby ring sold for $1,266,901 (£996,383.02) per carat, setting a new record at auction for a coloured gemstone.

History

It is also one of the most historically significant coloured stones.

Rubies are mentioned four times in the bible in association with attributes like beauty and wisdom and in the ancient language of Sanskrit, Ruby is called Ratnaraj, meaning 'King of the precious stones'.

Desire

Desire for ruby is just as great today as it always has been. As a symbol of passion, ruby makes an ideal romantic gift.

Consumers are drawn to the lush colour because it also signifies wealth and success.

Here at Ainsworth Jewellers, we have a wide range of Ruby jewellery, from earrings to stunning pendants. Time to treat that July birthday or celebrate the 40th anniversary!
